My favorite St. Patrick's Day memory involves a firm set-down and a great enlightenment from my Irish grandmother the day I walked in in a "Saint Paddy's Day" shirt. She gave me this horrid look and set me down to explain being Irish wasn't about four leaf clovers and booze, but about a will to survive, and a heart to go on.
ReplyDeleteI remember my grandmother (who was Irish) sitting me down and explaining who I descend from after giving me a scathing look the day I walked in celebrating "St. Paddy's Day". It was then I learned it wasn't 4 leaf clovers and booze that make up my Irish side - but a will to survive and a heart to hold on.

ReplyDeleteRad man, this looks awesome! Can't wait to read it:)
ReplyDeleteMy father was always great at spotting 4 leaf clovers. But the best ones are mounted on a piece of cardboard when he was in Ireland during WWII.

I read your blog post about Notre Dame and the Civil War at the New York Times Opinionator. I am from New York City originally, which has its own Irish traditions. My husband, who is of Italian heritage, also has Irish relatives. I loved your story of the first Fighting Irish and would love to have your book in my Civil War library.
ReplyDeleteI would say going to the parade every year with my family!
