I shared the excerpt by e-mail with the staff at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, with an offer to send a copy of the complete letter if it would be of interest. I received a kind and prompt reply from James H. Ogden, III, an historian at the park. He said they'd like a copy of the letter (it's on its way by post) and offered some additional interesting insight:
"The WWI training use here was pretty rough on the Chickamauga Battlefield: roads and utilities were constructed, Western Front trench systems were dug, damage was done to monuments, etc., so it is nice to see comments from a soldier who apparently had some appreciation of where he was."
