I'm interested in the records of a young soldier who served, in part, with the 11th PA vols. I can send his name in a separate email.

On April 30, 1863 he was wounded by a shell opposite Fredericksburg. He was rushed to the hospital where Dr. Allston Whitney of the 13th Mass. attended to him.

His arm needed to be amputated, but he told Whitney to wait until his mother arrived. Whitney was skeptical as it was difficult at that time for civilians to travel to the front. But the boy's mother did arrive and after a consultation with Dr. Whitney, she agreed to the operation. With her consent, the boy agreed also.

A few weeks later, the hospital was evacuated. Only those too weak remained behind. Dr. Whitney staid with them. The advancing Confederate army captured the hospital and all its occupants and sent them to Libby. The boy went to Libby and his mother accompanied him! She refused to leave her son and was incarcerated at Libby with her son. The inmates set aside a portion of the room for her privacy using blankets. She continued to care for her son with supplies she purchased with the money she had on her.

I don't know what happened to him, or his mother when they were released 6 weeks later.

I have quite a bit more of the story, but I'd like the boys records so I can discover more, and perhaps write an article about it.
