Just Received - Part II - "Intensely Human"

It's been a parade of books for review into my mailbox this week! In addition to James Marten's Civil War America: Voices from the Home Front, I also received Margaret Humphrey's newest book: Intensely Human: The Health of the Black Soldier in the American Civil War (John Hopkins University Press, 2008).

Dr. Humphreys is the Josiah Charles Trent Professor in the History of Medicine, a professor of history, and an associate clinical professor of medicine at Duke University. She is the author of the acclaimed Malaria: Poverty, Race, and Public Health in the United States (2001, JHU Press) and Yellow Fever and the South (1999, JHU Press).

I had the privilege of interviewing Margaret for a "Medical Department" column on typhus in 2006 and the greater pleasure and privilege of meeting her and hearing her speak at the 2007 Society of Civil War Surgeons conference, where she gave a preview of Intensely Human.
